Project Overview:
TNS were appointed under the CRE role for the full design and construction of a new lighting system along the drivers’ walkway at Leybridge Station, serving Orient Train Care Depot. The project aimed to improve driver safety and operational efficiency through enhanced illumination while minimising energy use and light spill.
Scope of Works:
- CRE delivery
- Installation of approx. 500 linear metres of cable management system (CMS) secured to existing fencing, complete with lids to provide protection against vandalism
- Supply and installation of approx. 200 new LED fittings, comprising Dexeco Taneks and Opus wall packs, all with IK10 impact resistance
- Intelligent lighting control incorporating absence dimming and presence detection to reduce unnecessary energy use and minimise light pollution
- Careful positioning of fittings to maximise uniform illumination of the walkway while preventing glare and light ingress into train drivers’ sightlines
- Installation of new distribution equipment and feeder pillars, including a new MCCB panel
- Co-ordination with UKPN for isolation of the DNO supply and reinstallation to facilitate replacement of a vandalised feeder pillar
- Earthing and bonding works in full compliance with relevant railway and BS 7671 requirements
Project Highlights:
- Delivered under stringent railway operational and safety standards in a live depot environment
- IK10 vandal-resistant fittings and lidded CMS provide long-term durability and reduced maintenance risk
- Energy-efficient lighting design with smart controls reduces running costs and environmental impact
- Careful attention to lighting angles protects train drivers’ visibility and safety during operations
- Collaborative working with UKPN to ensure safe isolation and reinstatement of supplies
Benefits to the Client:
The project has delivered a robust, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance lighting solution, enhancing safety and visibility along the drivers’ walkway. The combination of durable infrastructure and intelligent controls ensures resilience against vandalism and long-term cost savings.
